In a recent interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Chris Doughan, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team, expressed his concerns and predicted dire consequences if Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were to be elected as the President of Ghana. Doughan claimed that Bawumia lacks credibility and is not fit to lead the country.

Doughan’s remarks came in response to taunts from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) following former President John Mahama’s victory in the NDC’s flagbearership race, where he secured 98.9 percent of the total votes. The NPP downplayed Mahama’s win, stating that their presidential aspirants, particularly Vice President Bawumia, would defeat him in the 2024 elections.

However, Doughan dismissed the NPP’s confidence, labeling it as ignorance. He argued that Bawumia’s track record does not inspire confidence among Ghanaians, likening the idea of accepting him as President to “fetching water with a basket.”

While Doughan’s statements highlight the concerns raised by some members of the NDC regarding Bawumia’s suitability for the presidency, it is important to consider various perspectives on the matter. The NPP’s confidence in Bawumia stems from his experience as the Vice President and his involvement in the government’s policies and initiatives. Supporters argue that Bawumia’s economic expertise and leadership qualities make him a strong contender for the highest office.

In a nutshell, the debate surrounding Vice President Bawumia’s potential presidency reflects the contrasting views held by different political factions. As the 2024 elections draw nearer, it remains to be seen how Ghanaians will evaluate the candidates and make their decision based on their vision for the country and their track records. Ultimately, the choice lies in the hands of the voters, who will determine Ghana’s future leadership.
